Mackey Bio
Bruce Mackey, Governor-Elect, District 5230

I’m the son of Harold V. Mackey (LTC, USA, Ret.) and Caroline W. Mackey. Both my father and I are inductees in the Hanford Union High School Hall of Fame.  I was born on November 7, 1948 at Ft. Totten, NY.  Since my father was in the military, I lived in a variety of locations in the U.S. and overseas as a child until he retired to his hometown, Hanford in 1962.   I  graduated from Hanford Joint Union High School in 1966 and the University of California, Berkeley, in 1970.  I was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Regular Army and attended training at Fort Benning, Georgia where I graduated from the Infantry Officers Basic Course and received Parachutist Wings and a Ranger Tab.  For the next twenty five years I completed a variety of assignments in the United States, Viet Nam and the Middle East.  I was an Infantry Platoon Leader in Viet Nam and received the Combat Infantryman’s Badge and Bronze Stars for Valor and Merit.  Other assignments included the Republic of Yemen, Tunisia, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the Pentagon where I was a U.S. Delegate to the United Nations as an additional duty.  At my retirement in 1995 I received the Legion of Merit.

Following my retirement from the military I worked for seven years as the Nevada State Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Officer.  While in that position I received both national and state level awards.

In 2005 we moved to Hanford to care for aging parents.  I joined the Rotary Club of Hanford in 2010 and was selected as the “Rookie of the Year” that year.  In 2012-14 I participated in three “Ride Against Polio” events as part of El Tour de Tucson. In 2013 I  achieved second place nationally for funds raised.

I was President of the Club from 2014-15. Prior to becoming President, I attended the Rotary International Conference in Sydney, Australia.  As President we hosted a combined club event with Rick King as the featured speaker and donated over $6,000.00 to various charities in Hanford in addition to a single donation of $15,000 to the Adventist Hospital Birthing Center and donated approximately $16,000.00 to the Rotary International Foundation.  Additionally, we chartered a new Interact Club. I was selected as Club “Rotarian of the Year” in 2015 and was an Assistant Governor in 2015-16. The following year I received the Global Leadership Award 2016-17.  After two successful trips to Guatemala, I assumed responsibilities of Team Leader and have led the team to Guatemala three times. I’m a Major Donor, member of the Bequest Society and Paul Harris Society and was honored to be selected as the District Governor for District 5230 for the Rotary year 2021-22.
